General Practice Management Institute (Ireland)

Raising standards in general practice management

The General Practice Management Institute (Ireland) exists to recognise, uphold and advance professional standards in general practice management.

We provide a formal professional register for GP Practice Managers in Ireland. Our focus is on competence, consistency and continued professional development. Our role is to define and maintain internationally aligned professional standards.

In partnership with IGPM

GPMI is an independent institute working in partnership with the Institute of General Practice Management (IGPM) in the UK, drawing on its established framework and experience in professional recognition.

Why we exist

A consistent standard for a critical role

GP Practice Managers play a critical role in the safe, effective and sustainable running of primary care. Yet the role has not had a consistent, recognised professional standard in Ireland.

Well-managed practices are better placed to deliver safe, high-quality patient care. Clear professional standards for practice management support that work, benefiting GP Practice Managers, employers, staff and patients.

The Institute was established to:

provide formal professional recognition for GP Practice Managers

set clear, evidence-based standards

encourage ongoing professional development

support quality and consistency across general practice

Professional registration

Entry to the register is by assessment against the GPMI accreditation framework. Successful applicants are awarded the designation MGPMI (Member of the General Practice Management Institute).

Registration confirms that an individual:
